This dissertation is an article compilation thesis that explores the possibility of producing humanistic social science in general, using the case of conducting research on jihadist group members within the 'War on Terror' context. Empirically, the study employs first-hand interviews of jihadist group members in France. It finds that employing queer theory, crip theory, and affect theory to analyze both participants' lived reality and the way one ought to produce knowledge provides novel insights. Challenging reductionist narratives that frame jihadist group members as deviant or monstrous, it argues for nuanced interpretations that account for their complex lived experiences. The dissertation proposes to focus on intimacy-romantic relationships, friendships, and familial bonds— as the locus of projection and assignation of monstrosity as well as a space of agency and autonomy for the subjects of study. The theoretical framework presented therein advocates for de-exceptionalizing these actors and introduces critical (re)contextualization as a tool for ethical scholarship. This perspective situates jihadist group members as individuals inscribed in modernity whose aspirations and struggles often mirror broader and banal societal dynamics. Considering the question of how to concretely produce knowledge in this field, the thesis critiques the emotional and affectual regime prevalent in terrorism studies, advocating for data-gathering methods that consider both the researcher's and subject's inherent human vulnerability and agency. The dissertation concludes by urging scholars to critically examine how the War on Terror perpetuates colonial and imperial legacies in the way one produces knowledge, advocating for a justice-oriented - and tangible —humanistic sociological practice, one which ought to resist dehumanizing narratives. The dissertation proposes playfulness and metaphor as epistemological interventions, provoking readers to embark on a journey of exploring surprising parallels, revealing the narrow parameters confining pre-existing scholarship. the death penalty is a law on the books. there is no popular support for abolishing it in our country. Please find the right to privacy in the constitution. it simply does not exist. wont do to just google. What did i ask for- large scale survey. What did you provide? Colin Gonsalves claiming in court that millions were starving and dying of starvation because they had no aadhar. What did he base it on? that lakhs of ration cards were cancelled as they were not linked to aadhar. Unless you assume that those lakhs of ration cards were bonafide and theres been a massive conspiracy to hide millions of deaths from starvation- where did the bodies go? lakhs of people dying of starvation would be really difficult to hide! - his claim is already quite sus. aadhar was put into place to ensure that PDS reaches the appropriate end user, eliminating waste and graft by cancelling ration cards that are not connected to real people is actually helping poor people.

EPW article has no survey at all- only a mention of a handful of people who couldnt obtain their card in 2019 because of illness, old age etc. I got my aadhar in 2021, so yes there were teething troubles in accessing aadhar in the initial years- but theres no reason at all to believe its anything more than that- to believe these are persistent or widespread problems today.

Context article points to two students who claim they were not able to attend government schools because they didnt have access to aadhar. The local government denies this has happened at all. Again- no evidence of any widespread or persistent harm. just so you know- aadhar is not mandatory for enrollment in schools- its literally on the UIDAI website

It is of course wrong that any needy person should face additional impediments to access much needed PDS. thats what PDS is there for. but the fact that there are a handful of cases where some people with extremely difficult circumstances has fallen through the cracks does not mean that aadhar on the whole has caused more harm than good. Policy decisions are all about maximising benefits and minimising harms. I think these handful of unfortunate people should receive all the help they need to create an aadhar. But the fact that they hadnt as of 2019 received that help doesnt mean we shouldnt have some system of checking where public money goes.

They found aadhar improved delivery of services, increased financial inclusion of poor people and women.

Is my argument that there are no problems with aadhar? of course not. I know many people who have fake aadhar IDs so its not doing all it can to prevent graft. There are undoubtedly people who slip through cracks and overzealous officials who make aadhar mandatory when it explicitly shouldnt be. but on the whole has aadhar been a good thing? I have large scale surveys from one group of people saying it largely works and saves the government a ton of money. and I have individual case studies on the other hand and theoretical arguments by your Reetika Khera and Jean Dreze and others. I know which one is more generalisable. I also know how hard it is to fake data for a lakh odd people in a survey.

Do we have to be vigilant about whether our aadhar data is secure? yes. Do we need to do more- yes. Is aadhar a massive conspiracy to spy on political dissidents and opponents- hate to break it to you but that was already happening long before aadhar, and introduction of aadhar has not increased surveillance in any measureable way. On the whole- is aadhar a good thing for poor people- very likely yes.

Asking as I want to check where I stand in terms of pay. Just to give some background, I shifted from litigation to this job, as my earnings from litigation were stagnating and my curve was not rising as I would have liked (though I may go back after two years and try to get bigger clients). I am not from the law firm world and don't have much of a clue about pay scales there, hence asking this question. Have always been in litigation.

Another point I want to mention is that my savings are pretty high, as I live in my family home. So zero rent.

So where do I stand compared to partners in tier 1/2/3 law firms?

Gonna add to the Poonam Pradhan Saxena hate. I work in an insanely hectic T1 team (about 2 PQE) and at no point has it ever been as bad as a single day at NLUJ under PPS' reign - this should speak volumes. Woman left me, and several others, with deep mental scars. She's petty enough to be read this, but not human enough to feel anything by it.

More often than not, typos are merely a consequence of typing quickly and frequently on a small screen. It is not a sign of illiteracy that some make it out to be. The author of the main comment has argued with facts and logic and that is far more relevant here than an odd awkward turn in a sentence.

I came across this thread three years later and I think I can figure out the team OP works (or worked in) because I'm exactly in such a team and every word OP mentioned can be directly applied on my case as well.

While I am reasonably satisfied with the kind of work that I have had the opportunity to do, I am a little frustrated by the financial aspect of a very upper limit. I am considering a switch to a tier 1/2 law firm in Delhi specifically within the litigation/white collar crime scheme of things.

Can someone please give me an explanation of how this transition will be taking into account that I have worked in some of the best offices in the city over the last five years, but not longer than for about a year in each. I have learnt trial court High Court and Supreme Court work as well as a brief stint with a commercial law firm dealing in a lot more advisory and Corp kind of work. Also, which top 3 firms and what teams (if you’re aware) should I be seeking a reference into? if someone could give some suggestions?

My question is, how do such flimsy charges ever pass the muster with the honourable judge? Do they not observe the blatant partisanship with which law enforcement has been weaponised against fundamental rights? In this particular case, the defendants have now been remanded in judicial custody for 14 days! Was the honourable judge correct in how they applied the law? Is their order in conformity with the existing jurisprudence on this subject?

See, I get it i was also close to one of the deceased souls, and maybe this is my way of coping but, we clearly got a message on our batch group from the admin that "The university is having a memorial tomorrow morning at 10 around the acad block. There will be no official mail regarding the same, but whoever is on campus can go to the acad block."

This was just the admin trying to save its face, once the news leaked amongst the local media (which is very hostile to the NLUJ admin) and on LI only then MM and the admin decided to send a mail which we got roughly at 9:34 AM.

The insensitive way the admin handled the situation was appalling, and this has happened earlier as well, the way they had handled the alleged murder of Vikrant Nagaich, may he rest in peace.

But alas, our messages on this platform won't do much other than aggravate the pain. Let's bury the hatchet.
