I would say learning curve is the same, just volume of work is lower so you get think and learn in peace. For example, while drafting an agreement, there's some time to read up on relevant laws and figure out why something is the way it should be, as opposed to rushing to replace names in a template quickly due to paucity of time. YMMV

I recently finished my 5-year law degree from an average college affiliated with Mumbai University (no placement support). My interest is in General Corporate and M&A, and I interned at ELP, LKS, and a few other places during college, but I couldn't get a PPO. After graduating, I applied to several Tier 2 and Tier 3 firms for assessment and traineeships but didn’t get through.

Now, I’ve started as a trainee at a boutique law firm in their corporate advisory team (earning 18k/month which hardly covers my expenses as I am not from around here), but I want to move to a Tier 1 or Tier 2 law firm. What can be my roadmap?

Speak orally first, no emails. This is not an mnc, law firms are much more personalized. They will feel you are being oversmart if you inform your decision by email. At the time of leaving you can say thanks to everyone by email

Make up an excuse, try to avoid telling real reasons unless the reason is a solid one

First of all, its great that you are thinking through.

Second, I will suggest you to speak with the partner you have worked the most (even if its indirectly).

Third, be ready for them to give lot of gyaan (mostly its self serving and occasionally can also be true).

Fourth, don't rush to get last date especially when the first time you are informing about the decision. I am sure you must have some deadline in your head or pressure from the new place that you are planning to join, but give your existing firm a day or so before you can start discussing your last day.

It's surprising to see such condescension directed at corporate lawyers, especially from someone who claims to value hard work. As a non-NLU corporate lawyer, I can tell you that the challenges we face are just as real. As someone who also intends to litigate, but is unable to do so because of financial constraints, it is really concerning to see such views. Understand that not everyone has the luxury of choosing a career based solely on passion and many of us have families depending on our financial stability.

Your view seems rooted in an elitist mindset, suggesting that only advocates truly understand the law. You mention meritocracy while ignoring that many corporate lawyers come from diverse backgrounds and work just as hard to earn their positions. Claiming that corporate jobs are not a hallmark of merit while you enjoy the privilege of connections is rich! Many of us have had to hustle without any safety nets, unlike some who benefit from family ties in high places. So instead of looking down on others in the profession, perhaps you should consider that every legal path has its struggles and merits. Your disdain only highlights your own insecurity and lack of appreciation for the diverse contributions we all make. So please stop diminishing others to inflate your own sense of worth.

Also, its frankly amusing to see your disdain for corporate lawyers when, in reality, we take pride in our work and the income it provides. We put in 14-hour days, and earn our pay through hard work, not by relying on handouts or connections. You’re in no position to raise a finger at our choices. You may excel in your field, but that doesn’t give you the right to demean others who contribute in equally significant ways.

Let’s not reduce our noble profession to divisive narratives and we should be lifting each other up instead. Everyone deserves respect for their choices - you chose litigation, we chose corporate law. That's the end of it.

I am a (relatively) new salaried/ retained partner. Just started doing BD. Any good practical tips? For example, I just learned that taking a small token gift to a 1st time BD meeting really helps. Keep it something very basic (nothing that eaises eyebrows) but thought through - they dont expect it but take it very positively.

It is their country, their laws. Yes, keep yourself away from all these useless and meaningless SM posts. If you have done so, then it may impact you. SM never forgets, so when you post something think of the potential consequences (direct and indirect, immediate and later). The US giving you a visa is a privilege, not a right. Deleting posts does nothing - cyber forensic experts can retrieve everything if they want to.

"Why should I be singled out" - because YOU are applying for the visa, the US is not asking you to come. You need the US, the US does not need you. Secondly, whataboutism is a very weak argument when one breaks the law.

I am going to divide my life into pre ADHD and post ADHD diagnosis. I am 34, Female.

Took some painfully regrettable decisions pre ADHD diagnosis that sort of derailed my legal career. Took some time off, regrouped and now on a better trajectory in terms of mental health. I want to make the most of lost time and opportunities and I am committed to working incredibly hard. Please don’t doubt me.

Ever since my medication, I am doing so much better in terms of emotional regulation and other mental health issues and can handle stress in limited quantities as I have some other health issues.

I’ve moved to Hyderabad and I am thinking of getting into Litigation. I am not very keen on pursuing Family Law, but considering my limitations, I will have to pursue that stream for now. I also love Tech/AI/Data Privacy.

I am just a bundle of nerves as this is my only chance at life. Money is not the priority but I need to slowly build a regular income stream. Please share some thoughts/ insights/ anything that can help me in my journey.

Basically the title. These are people who are scheming constantly 24/7. They have hawk like Instinct, and they keep changing their strategies to climb the proverbial corporate ladder in college and work place settings. They reduce competition not by enhancing their technical competency but but resorting to manipulation, rumour mongering, gaslighting peers in college/workplace and in general being very shady. How does one deal with such people especially when they capture power? Would love to know.

Can anyone shed light on CLAT PG- starting with some basic questions like is doing LLM from India worth it, how should one go on about selecting the area they want to pursue (I have a few I'm finding difficult to choose from), how to prep for the exam, and what are the opportunities you get after completing LLM apart from academia?
