Bro, I'm no Abhinav chandrachud or Singhvi's son. I'm far from privileged. I know sons and daughters of senior advocates who joined the profession and were so pathetic that they either quit or just assist their hotshot fathers and don't have any standing of their own. I have to struggle for briefs, although i would agree sometimes my mom and her colleagues refer me one or two cases for SC and tribunals since my mom practises at a HC but i don't make a lot from those briefs. I'm struggling as much as a first gen lawyer. Moreover, I am an outsider here at Delhi and i regularly see how native lawyers who are jaat/gujjars/punbajis get orders from judges because the bench here comprises their own kind only. I dont have the privilege of getting orders because of caste/ethnicity. You just dont understand my struggles.

I wont get into courts vs corp but I need to say this, regardless of your parent's post, being a second generation lawyer helps and I don't mean to disregard your struggles or challenges you have faced by you don't sound like person who could call yourself a 'first generation lawyer' after saying things like 'my mom did law' and 'she gave me a few cases'

It baffles me to see first, “no benefit” then “only benefit”, then one more benefit of “few cases”. Not that first gen individuals cannot succeed, but the shear lack of acknowledgement of privilege and inherent contradictions in the statement prove why there is a difference between second gen and first gen. Neither first gen students come with contacts with chambers and firms nor they have privilege of someone passing on his/her business to them. They need to work for very things you got on platter, especially those who are introverts and not good at networking. Nothing wrong with it as long as you are able to recognize your privilege before passing on your words of wisdom to others.

Can someone translate this into English please? I am a blind person. I have pointed out before that people are making their content (posts and comments) inaccessible when they do this on Legally India - writing Hindi content using English letters. Either write in English or in Hindi using a Hindi keyboard (newsflash: changing your keyboard language settings isn't hard). Screen reader software packages that blind and partially sighted people use read this kind of stuff in a completely nonsensical and 'scrambled' way. A translation, therefore, would be very useful indeed.

1. Very little of what is posted on here could ever honestly be described as "Interesting comments that cast new light on a problem or situation and that might make lawyers think". And for every one piece of helpful advice, there are three unsubstantiated opinions which are unhelpful to all - in other words, bad advice (especially regarding application, recruitment or entry procedures for things overseas). True, sometimes they are marked "contested" or other measures are taken, but often not.

2. If anything, comments on voting patterns tend to speak those truths that other people may find (ideologically) inconvenient or offensive, even if they are repeated. Please think carefully about whether you want Legally India to be a forum which has a reputation of populist pandering. Or does Legally India have an ideology too?

3. You know as well as everyone who uses this platform with any regularity that comments that violate one or other of the stipulations in the "Don't publish" section are regularly published (it is true that some are later retracted or redacted, but there are those that aren't).

If you wish for continued traction, I think you just have to admit that your operating model has resulted in this becoming a forum where certain people say things (or say things in a particular way) that they wouldn't if the anonymity measures weren't as strong as they are, and that certain childish fights are played out on here. In fact, why not? That, for all you know, is a niche need that hasn't been served by other equivalent forums. This anyway de facto became a forum for that once you stopped publishing news stories. So why not make it official? Of course, you should maintain the guidelines about not defaming people, not commenting about protected characteristics and the like, but I think a certain level of ad hominem is just unavoidable.

As a side note, as for the Calcutta High Court, I got to know that the Juniors over there would charge about Rs. 500 today per appearance, and when a few of them would ask for Rs. 850 (50 GMs - In Calcutta, fees are charged by Gold Mohurs where 1GM=17Rs)), the AOR would say "your senior would charge 10GMs (Rs. 170). So, the Junior Counsels, of say 1-2 years into practice, would earn about Rs. 500 per appearance, and say nothing (depending on their Senior) from their Chamber Senior. For someone with 3-4 or maybe 5 years of practice, I've heard they charge Rs. 2000-5000 per appearance. As for the AOR mentioning that the Seniors would charge Rs. 170 (10GMs) - that would be true, but 20 years ago when the Seniors were raw junior, which, accounting for inflation, would be Rs. 350-450ish today (I'd still argue that Rs. 170 then is worth more than Rs. 500 is today). I've also heard that since the Solicitors would primarily dominate the Original Side of the Cal HC, the Counsels would be dependent on them for briefs, and most of the Solicitors would not pay such Counsels. I am not sure if this is true or not, but I hope somebody sheds some light on this. [Mind you, this is mostly for the Original Side, not the Appellate - I have very little idea on how that would work, since I am assuming that the Advocate would be briefed directly by the Client there]

Enough on Cal HC, for Bombay HC, I've noticed that they have the same system as that of the Cal HC, with the Original Side being considered more glamorous, and the Counsels dependent on Solicitors for briefs. I would really love to know how much the Junior Advocates would be paid per appearance in Bombay, and if they are paid by their Chamber Seniors as well. Ditto on Drafting and Conference Fees.

If you want to do better in your studies then try to read Jurisprudence book. That will help you understand the lagal things in better ways.

I need some advice. I'm interning at a T-3 firm and today on my 1st day I was assigned nothing substantial except for bitchwork like finding guidelines on something or circulars. Now, I have done my fair share of this in my previous internships, but this was interspersed with substantial research prompt giving and legal research which was stimulating and interesting to work on. But this experience has left a bad taste. Are all law firms like this? I'm concerned that if I do nothing in this internship I will end up not getting a better internship for the next cycle. I need help, I am also thinking that maybe it is the practice area that I chosen which is at fault. Please advice on the next steps I should take.

I know my friend who practices at civil court lucknow gets paid around 15-20k, also he ensures clients pay my friend for miscellaneous work. He makes 30-35k from the chamber at a tier 2 city like lucknow.His senior is one of the biggest lawyers of civil court and makes a modest 50-60 lakh per annum. My senior who practices at lucknow bench makes similar amount but pays me nothing.

I didn't expected to be cross examined for this but there are numerous female juniors at the chamber and a lot of them have been at one point were harassed by the associates and even by my senior's husband. So I'm not the only one who complained about it to her and she has repeatedly tried to brush it off. So I took my chances by posting it here so they won't be able to guess my identity. This would be a workable idea. Find a lawyer who can make a public statement or social media post on your behalf, in their own name, without revealing your name. At that point it would be easier for other publications to cover it.

Hi, so here is the blue print for switching practice areas in our field of law,

The primary factor would depend as to what is your PQE, usually changing of the practice areas isn't difficult for the first three years of the profession, the sooner you change the better it is preferably do it by the end of the first year.

Now when you are formulating your CV, draft the same in such a manner that includes the work oriented towards GC Role and then start applying to as many places as you can. Remember the chances of getting through is not that easy specifically when you are switching practice considering the firm usually require someone experienced so get ready for the rejections that might come in the way and simultaneously applying to other places. Usually the chances of getting through depends upon as to how desperately the team is looking to hire resources. Apply to Tier 2 firms also as chances of switching to different practice is more in that case scenario (assuming you are from NLU and Tier 1 Law firm)

As a lawyer, you want a CEO of a private company to be arrested because (allegedly) he sold/reserved tickets of a concert for few people and because those tickets were not made available for general public it resulted in all hue and cry.
