There is absolutely nothing that prevents the so-called T2 NLUs from improving themselves and their image if they are willing to do so. Contrary to pre-2010 era, we have many capable and qualified law graduates willing to return to academia temporarily and permanently. Yet very few of them get recruited as faculty in such T2 NLUs, nor are the students from these places make regular and sustained demand from the admin about getting such faculty, getting similar exposure and academic infra that their T1 NLU counterparts begin taking for granted. Honestly, the student quality is not that hugely different. They need the necessary guidance and basic support, that's all. The vacuum is sadly being sought to be filled up predatory private individuals and organisations as a result.

The recent batch size increase at many top NLUs, Nls from 80 to 300, nlud from 80 to 180(60 in bcom llb), nujs from 120 to 180, nliu from 120 to 200 ( bsc llb at both), gnlu 200, nluj and nalsar remained same though-around 120, is concerning, not only for the students who r in those institutions but also for lower NLUs.

There is a high probability now that all the vacancies at various tol law firms and legal inhouse roles, which are already very limited in absolute numbers in India, will get filled by the huge pool of tier 1 students only. Not only the top firms but since many students at tier 1s also won't get tier 1 firm jobs, they would take up the decent paying tier 2 and beyond law firms too.

Why would any recruiter even consider visiting any lower NLUs or choose any student from lower NLUs when they r getting as good a quality at t1 nlus only from the huge pool of students there? There are high chances that the recruiter is a tier 1 alumni him/her-self also which ruins the case even more for the lower NLUs.

I'm in the last year of my BALLB, how can I effectively approach law firms for an articleship if I've already reached out to several via email and followed up without receiving any responses? Additionally, could you recommend some solicitor firms I should consider, especially those that have a practice in different practice areas, which I believe would provide a more comprehensive experience?

They have been making it increasingly difficult over the last six months. At present, they will require you to be there physically for almost two months, but they will not sponsor your accommodation (not even within the campus), nor will they sponsor travel more than once during this period. Therefore, either they have to find someone who is on a sabbatical and can manage alternate accommodation nearby during this period (which won't be cheap), or else they are basically looking for only people from Bengaluru, or else those who will be willing to spend money for the opportunity to teach at NLSIU.

When they had started, they were being more flexible with this initiative, but now it is getting bogged down owing to faulty policy/implementation. However, if you do end up teaching there after settling these hiccups, then you will find the students to be good. Even the 3-Year cohort.

Firstly its a T3 firm which is on road to become a T2 firm soon since its rapidly expanding. Pay is on par with T2 firms - A0 salary ranges at around 70k-80k per month, for A2 they pay around 18LPA. It's a top heavy firm so once you reach the position of SA, the pay will be on par with T1's.

These days there are many associates in law firms without the fixed time-bound career trajectory (eg: SA 4 years after graduation, PA after 7 years and so on).

This might be due to experiences from in-house/Tier 2 getting discounted, or people who took gap years to do something else.

How much difference does it make if your title does not match your batchmates?

Harsh truth: none. No T1s and no T2s. Any hiring of BO'24 grads now is an anomaly arising out of unforeseen vacancies. Your best case scenarios now involve utilizing every contact/reference you could dream of, for either applying for internships and hoping to impress people so exceptionally that they'd gire you, or just joining litigation chambers and hoping to eventually make the switch somehow.

I agree. I feel NUJS students should only rally with students of other T1 NLUs or by themselves. No need to march alongside students of such obscure regional colleges. Would NLSIU students ever march alongside KSLU students? Come on, we are ranked 5 in NIRF!! It will only spoil the reputation of NUJS to do all this. It’s important to keep the prestige and elite status of NUJS intact.

To give everyone the background to this:

- As was mentioned in another LI thread, it is widely believed that AMS-GShanks was the first choice of the WB govt, but both allegedly withdrew fearing that they would become unpopular for taking up this case. In AMS's case, he is not indebted to Mamata anymore, because he is no longer a TMC-supported RS member from Bengal. He will be joining from Telangana now.

- Had AMS taken up this case, it may also have caused anger within the Congress, as RaGa himself has criticised the TMC government. Remember also that AMS could be a candidate for the Attorney General's post if the Congress wins in 2029, and GShanks for the ASG's post. So why should they wade into this mess and risk their reputation?

- In contrast, Kapil Sibal is no longer with the Congress. He has left in exchange for being a Samajwadi-supported RS candidate. And he doesn't give a damn about being popular or unpopular among the public. He is SCBA Prez and an RS MP, plus earns crores in fees. So why bother?

- Meanwhile, it's unlikely that MG will face similar calls to withdraw, given that she has a mere secondary role and hasn't even spoken a full sentence at the hearing. It's quite possible that MG could have been recommended to the WB govt by GShanks, as a fellow NLSIU alum. A lot of people are heartbroken at MG taking up this case and are ranting online, but these are mostly Gen Z fanboys/fangirls with zero clout. The fact is that MG has the full backing of the NLSIU community and that is all that matters.

- Finally, the legal media's coverage to the Adish Agarwala-led backlash is interesting. LiveLaw openly campaigned for Sibal during the SCBA election and has blacked out the news so far. BB as well. Only RW legal outlets like LawBeat and Verdictum have covered it so far. But all eyes on Adish Agarwala to see how far he can take this and whether his conflict of interest claim will snowball into a wider protest against Sibal, backed by the BJP.

Everyone at the Bar already knows who the good advocates are and who aren't. The reason to apply has more to do with impressing clients, getting a cool title/gown and the ability to charge higher fees (all of which are very good reasons to apply).

But believe me when I say the Bar and the Bench already have a very good of who is good and who is not (even if it isn't necessarily reflected in senior designations).

Modi keeps talking about the Khan Market gang and Lutyens lobby, but this is one system he has not dismantled. It will be great if he does. The solution can simply be as follows: take away all existing Senior Advocate designations and reallocate them to:

- anyone who has 25 years of practice

- plus appeared in at least 500 cases in those 25 years, of which note more than 20 percent are PILs (to discourage frivolous lawyers)

- plus authored at least 10 articles in a list of pre-approved law journals

- plus clocked 1,000 hours of pro bono work or guest lectures at law schools in those 25 years

- plus has given opportunities to at least 50 interns in those 25 years, with pay

- plus has not been convicted any offence

- plus has not been found guilty of any breach of professional ethics

The final step should be to pay a registration fee of Rs 50 lakhs , to be transferred to improve the conditions of trial courts.

Seeing the trend, the 'deserving' and the 'distinguished' will gradually simply decide not to apply. Only then will the bar and the bench truly start recognising and appreciating the genuine seniors because it will be based on advocacy skills and integrity, not on political connections or family inheritance. The senior designation system is almost broken. It is not even a necessary evil like the collegium.

How does it matter who I am? I could be a student, or a faculty, or even the VC herself. No one here should care who’s there on the other end of this. Sorry, man. I fully agree that the incident is now conveniently being presented only in part by the students, but nothing excuses the faculty's behaviour as caught on camera. They are supposed to be the mature ones, compared to students. They also have the authority enforce punishments, which is why they should not blow their cool in public like that. As for the removal of students from the hostel, I hope that's been done after following due process and giving them the opportunity to be heard. Even ragging complaints require that.

Just avoid Corp-1 (and some of Corp-2) and you're good to go. Every T1 place has bad work hours and some amount of toxicity depending upon your partners but by and large, some of KCO's M&A teams truly stand out — largely because the cluster models ensure that you'll get to experience work from a variety of the 5-6 partners in your team, and because most administrative decisions are done jointly by the partners, nobody has the the extreme power/privilege of developing a norm of giving unreasonable deadlines, work hours, or being obnoxiously rude on the face of it (as compared to smaller teams at CAM M&A, for example, where you report to just one partner and they can largely do as they please. While I haven't personally interacted with AS a lot, I've heard pretty good things about Corp-3 and Corp-5, especially about VS and KM.

Lastly, keep an eye out for which team SV & his CAM coterie joins - he's also a considerate boss, from what I hear.

Lateral hirings at T1s are almost never advertised. So, no, it's pretty impossible for you to even know the where & when without referrals. That said, if you generally network in T2 firms, stay in touch with batchmates in big firms & maybe approach a good headhunter, things could work out.

Tldr; most extracurriculars are purely for your hobby and no law firm worth their salt cares about some random debate or ADR competition. Moots are a good opportunity to interact with the judges and get internships, but it needs to be a good enough moot for inviting such people useful to you.

If you're at a university that has campus placements, then focus on your ranks and chill — otherwise make internships, feedback and references your best friend and give it all you've got. All the best!

lev off, never put such precise details on this site. Do you really think the grandiose HR person can't figure out who you are, now?

That said, it's a decent place to start your career with. If you got your internship slot from your university, then you must be from one of those 4 NLUs they hire from, and that means that you'll be assessed in a proper fashion for your month — weekly feedback sessions and approachable partners. My advice is that you shouldn't think too much about the offer at this stage and use this opportunity to learn as much and ask as many questions as you feel like. In my experience, no other T2 firm has such an assessment programme. So, use that to the fullest, and whatever happens after that, you'll end the month on a better note!

The thing about most T1s is that they always have more vacancy than boutiques and T2s, because they preempt both steady clientele and attrition. So, if you demonstrate why you deserve a spot, they'll be more likely to hire you than not. Worst case scenario of you performing brilliantly and the firm not having any spots left would probably still get valuable referrals for getting more interviews at at least T2s and boutiques.

Exactly, this is my point. Also, Please don't think that I'm being ******, but I'm really pissed of when people get internships at big places without any prior exp. and then they look down upon people like me.

I have an average CV, but without contacts nothing seem to work. I am simply applying at 200 places, and not even getting reply from 5.
