Assuming the fees will be Rs 18-20 lakh over five years: You are being extremely profligate if your "other expenses" are accounting for Rs. 10-12 lakhs over five years when your hostel, mess and utilities are included in the money you are paying to the college. I agree that the fee is unaffordable for the poor, but you have no standing to be complaining if you can afford to spend so much on eating out, partying etc.

Also, doesn't the government have n number of means based scholarships exactly to help poor students (at the cost of merit bases scholarships)? NLS should condone or reduce the fees of a few poor students and renew it on a yearly basis subject to academic performance.

Y'all are forgetting something important - NLS offers aid to those who genuinely need it. If you do, all you need to do is apply. I know friends who have got 100% off on tuition and hostel. Even if your financial situation is somewhat troubling, there are different grades of financial aid offered to students. Regardless, most who come here are from cushy families with daddy's money. If you're one of those who needs help, the institution offers it. Please don't raise hell without knowing the full picture. You could misdirect a kid's college decision based on half-baked information.

Give it a rest. Even 10 years back, the funding wasn't much more or much less (taking into account the so-called inflation argument too) and yet good administrators like Ranbir Singh and Madhava Menon (and his initial successors) knew how to use it to take their colleges to the top. The problem now is you have either inexperienced admins like Messiah with grand delusions or incompetent ones like SKD, Bajpai and the guy at NUJS. They've destroyed the quality of these institutions irreversibly.

I'm not going to spend time talking about Mishra's track record because everyone knows what it is. I just want to know if we will have a new BCI Chairman, to carry out much-needed pending reforms like foreign law firm entry, Indian Judicial Service, NLU nationalisation, law school curriculum reform and opening of foreign law school campuses. Or will Mishra hold both posts simultaneously?

It's also curious how Mishra is so important to the BJP. He was initially with the BSP, then switched to the Congress when Manmohan Singh became PM, then became a BJP supporter when Modi became PM.

I am a first trimester student at NLS, since the last few days I am not in the frame of mind, everyday I heard of all my classmates writing crazy essays finding novel connections. I can’t do all that. I Have a project submission on Thursday whose first draft I have just written but I just cannot understand any of it , I can’t even find even 1 proper case to cite I don’t know how to write the words don’t come out into the laptop.

Understand one thing before you set foot into law school:

Committees / Cells are basically auxillaries of the college management, which carry out essential college functions, like placements, internships, moot court selections, reviewing publications, etc. However, college cannot employ people and financially sustain this. They lure students into working for these committees / Cells, in exchange for scraps of power (which these students can abuse for themselves). Basically, it's just overhyped unpaid labour, where you are a slave if the college admin, but are considered a baller amongst your batchmates. Don't let anyone else convince you otherwise. This is as real an assessment as you'll get.

The reason for the large turnout is quite simple. The class that opposes Mamata the most is the educated urban middle class. They may form merely 10 to 15 percent of the overall population of Bengal, but they easily form over 95% of the Calcutta High Court bar, if not 100%. This class was quiet when TMC goons were killing and raping Dalit and tribal women in villages, but the rape and murder of a middle-class girl who was a doctor has stirred them because they relate to the victim more. Then add to the fact that the BJP, Left and Congress joined hands, so lawyers supporting them also tagged along. Thus, you pretty much had the entire bar on the streets.

Mamata doesn’t give a damn because they know that this class can never vote her out of power. Much like how Lalu ruled Bihar for many years, despite inflicting a jungle raj.

I'm a third year student at one of the Tier 3 NLU, with CGPA, around 8/10. Internships at 3 Boutique law firms, district courts, along with Participation in 3-4 Moots and ADR competitions, which were conducted by Big 4. Also, I've presented 8 research papers, and published 2 of them.

I understand that this CV is very below average. But any ways to improve it by the end of my 3rd year.

The phrase 'exam technique' exists for a reason. There are exam hacks (perfectly legal/ethical tricks that don't involve cheating or brown envelopes or cutting out CCTV footage) which, if mastered, can help even an average student to be successful in a standardised test. We all know this. Therefore, not to belittle your achievement, but your passing of CLAT (even if it is with very good marks) isn't a lifelong certification of intelligence. You have to show us how well you can do in an environment where a one-size-fits-all technique or hack doesn't work, where techniques vary, or where you aren't (or can't be) spoonfed exam technique as a result of knowledge mattering as much as (if not more than) technique, because that's life, that's what learning is like. Now get off your high horse, put your head down and prove yourself. I know you can do it, and, in your heart, I think you do, too.

They do not have a PR team!!! you can easily end up with a corporate Job if you join and perform decently, Most of the T1 firms that come for recruitment send alums and that is why you will see, they have a decent placement record. For Ex - CAM sent RC this year and there are around 12+ offers, Trilegal did not go to many places but YS heads corp practice north, so it took one call. overall the biggest advantage is the big alumni base. People say it is degrading which is somewhat fair because they do not get funds from the state govt, so no PR, few guest lectures, and no good visiting faculty, and Professors are not research-oriented. The batches are fairly competitive so enough stimulation for an individual to excel.

Joined a small boutique firm from a tier 1 firm and switched practice area to transactions. I was a high performer in my previous team and was appreciated often for my work but my work at the new place is getting highly marked up and its making me anxious. The work i'm currently doing is not even that complicated, especially in comparison to the quality and kind of work i was used to doing at the T1. Not sure if the reason behind the high mark up is me being not cut out for transactions or if I am just not used to the way things function here (the people seem to have set pattern for the work including in relation to giving comments while reviewing docs received from counterparties). There is no communication whatsoever, I am just mindlessly drafting transaction docs without having any awareness of the origin and laws surrounding it and no feedback is given after sending work. Even the person marking up seems to be just doing it for the sake of showing huge markup over my work and they are close to the partner while I have no line of communication. Don't know how to handle the situation or if I' just feeling paranoid and anxious for no reason or if I'm just not good at transactional work.

I work as an in house counsel for a fintech unicorn. I have PQE of 7 years, have always been an in house counsel through my career. My salary is:

Fixed: 40 LPA

Variable: Upto 20% of fixed (Generally around 12-14% so can say 5 LPA)

ESOPs: 4L vested each year (mostly worthless as I probably won't end up exercising them)

Just wanted to understand how that salary compares to industry standard. How much is the gap as compared to a lawyer working for a Tier 1 firm in India with 7 years PQE?

I mean do one need to have completed 12th in Non medical stream for it?

does it make any difference in the law course along with that?

if it does not specify non medical stream (their site does not) will it affect my further studies if I am from any other stream?

I agree. Girls are naturally sensitive and empathetic, so they form close friendships easily and faster than boys. It’s evident across batches at GNLU. The other problem with boys is that of toxic masculinity and bro mentality. Instead of reaching out to a boy for friendship, they will instead compare who has bigger muscles, who can drink more etc. Then there is the issue of ragging and hierarchy, which makes friendship between seniors and junior impossible. Girls don’t rag juniors or insist that they address them as Mam, so inter-batch friendship between girls becomes easy.

If you value your sanity, please don’t apply/accept a position here. It’s so bad that last year almost 6-8 A0s left. Heard from a friend that last month itself, 3 people left. Everyone is drowning with work, people literally don’t sleep coz the deadlines are crazy. Very very toxic work environment also.
