Abhishek Sinha turns towards learning from partnership

Khaitan & Co partner and 2006 ILS Pune graduate Abhishek Sinha has resigned from the firm to start-up an a new learning provider for young lawyers and law students.

Sinha had begun his career at DSK Legal, then moved to AZB & Partners in 2007 and Khaitan & Co in 2009. In 2015, he had joined Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas in Mumbai as a partner, re-joining Khaitan that same year.

He had also been visiting lecturer at KC Law College between 2008 and 2009.

Sinha told us last week via WhatsApp: “NotJustLex will offer certain specialised moderated classroom programmes and online programmes, with the intend to bridge the gap between theoretical learning and expectations of law firms, corporates, and clients.

“[The] focus is primarily on participatory learning. It’s a platform for young lawyers and law students. [The] idea is to provide the participants a distinct professional edge in this competitive corporate environment.”

His resignation will take effect on 31 August.

Are there any competitors in the market? Ipleaders and a few others probably.

Jeete ga bhai jeete ga. Humara bhai jeetega.

Its not east to leave a couple of million dollar job to start such a venture. Kudos to Abhishek. Look forward to seeing it as a new unicorn in Indian market.

Pagle bhaiya, Bhavnano ko samjho. He would have made at least couple of millions considering he was a star partner at Khaitan during his PA and Partner days put together.

Partner for 5 years @ 80L pa, 4 cr, PA for 3 years @ 50L pa (in 2012-15), 1.5 cr.
Post tax less less than half a million.

No way one million, leave alone two million.

Which world brother?? If you think a Khaitan Equity Partner makes 80Lakhs p.a. then you are not working in a law firm. Are you a student? Working in a corporate? This year PAs made 80.

I am assuming he wasn't an equity partner from Day 1 of getting promoted to partner. So averaged it out.
All PAs made 80 this year? Are you sure?
Also, he was a PA 2012-15. I suppose now you will say all PAs made 80 even back in 2012-15 year after year.

Better not work in a firm that harasses. Kco has a bad work culture. Unsafe for girls. Lots of stories yet to come out.

KCO is no more the firm with nice people that it used to boast about - now it’s toxic. Specially the culture of favouritism promoted by a certain someone (who surprisingly goes back to time immemorial)

Kudos to the bloke for trying. Personally do not feel that the market is big enough. The proliferation of these kind of courses indicate that there is a perception that the classroom learning at law schools (which is what most law students since last 15-18 years have been going to law schools for) is failing to produce prepared corporate lawyers even at entry level. The rising cost of education at National Law Schools must be viewed in this light. To have some kind of prestige attached with the course, Mr. Sinha must ensure that the course is competitive and also instructive. Rainmaker has already tried this- out of curiosity, I tried one course at Rainmaker and their course was heavily outdated and light on learning materials. Mr. Sinha really must do something different than Rainmakers.

The reason i think this stands out is because of AIS' profile. He knows his deal mechanics; but hasnt lost touch with academics.
