RMLNLU VC Balraj Chauhan headed to holiday, new-VC hunt begins

RMLNLU Lucknow vice chancellor (VC) Balraj Chauhan will finish his five-year tenure as VC at the university on 2 January. The university has formed a search committee to appoint the new VC, and has invited applications for the post latest by Monday.

Chauhan, who was previously the director at NLIU Bhopal, said: “After being associated with two universities the plan is to relax for a while.”

“If the search committee is not able to provide the new VC by January I may continue for some time,” he added.

Chauhan told Legally India he left his position at NLIU mid-term after being offered the office of VC at RMLNLU in 2008. Before NLIU, he has held the roles of director, legal affairs at Lucknow University, member UP State Law Commission, and member UP State Legal Services Authority.

He is presently also a Nalsar Hyderabad general council member.

Earlier today, Legally India reported that Chauhan and the RMLNLU administration was rebuked by the Allahabad high court for ill-handling a disciplinary proceeding against its student and not concluding the case until the student’s death two years later.

In August, Legally India reported that RMLNLU students had complained to UP chief minister Akhilesh Yadav about the poor state of affairs on the campus, including bad placements, administration, lack of professionalism, and no ear for student grievances.

How can the search committee invite applications within such a short window of time? It seems as if only predetermined individuals need apply for the post. There is a similar lack of proper procedure in the selection of VCs across national law schools. I urge the Lucknow students to call for an extension of the deadline and adequate publicisation of the post so competent candidates can apply, rather than settle for a stooge in office for the next five years.

RML needs a vibrant VC, who can save this sinking law school due to internal politics, no value of hard working teachers,no value of new ideas, ... lazy teachers who even not bother to sit in office during office hrs ... government shd form a committee of some NLU VCs to select the VC of RML nly by govt officials who are nt able to visualize the need of day

Considering the present state of affairs,unless an extremely able VC who'll be able to take on political pressure and work for the betterment of the student community and strive to ensure an academic environment befitting that of a National Law University,this place is headed for doom.

If not for Prof. Chauhan, the University would have become a general state university by now. Considering the kind of students that RMLNLU has, it requires a strong hand to control and drive RMLNLU.

The best news i'ave heard so far since my law school days. The VC was destined to go but due to some political elements this was due for long time. He was responsible for almost all the bad things ever happened to RMLNLU.

I believe RMLNLU's current students are well equiped to surge into new horizoz.

t is learnt that the Search Committee has taken a decision in the last week of December 2012 for appointment of a Vice-Chancellor of RMNLU. The matter is pending with the Government for approval. It is now more than 50 days and the Government is unable to take a decision in the matter leaving the students of this University at the mercy of God. There is a great rumour these days in the high circle of judiciary and the executive that some persons are interested in the appointment of someone, whose name does not appear in the panel of names selected by the Search Committee. Now let us wait for the next move in the political corridor of the State of Uttar Pradesh.
