New Vice Chancellor (VC) appointments or renewals at national law universities (NLUs) punctuate 2019. While NUALS Kochi and GNLU Gandhinagar got their new VCs recently, two NLU heavyweights viz. my alma mater, NUJS Kolkata and NLSIU Bangalore are in the midst of VC selections. Reportedly, Prof NK Chakrabarti has been recommended by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi for the position of NUJS’ VC recently and the Executive Council ratification in this regard is awaited.

By July of last year, NUJS Kolkata’s interim administration had unilaterally shut down its distance learning certificate courses contractually provided by all third parties.

It’s the very early hours of Wednesday morning, and Prof Ishwara Bhat is awake. The NUJS Kolkata vice chancellor (VC) has barely three hours remaining until the students’ 9:00am, 28 March 2018 ultimatum calling for his resignation before the “passive” protest is scheduled to turn into an “active” one.

The NUJS Kolkata student juridical association (SJA) president reacted to NUSRL Ranchi vice chancellor Prof BC Nirmal’s statement that NUSRL students are protesting on campus not for rights but for a holiday, calling him “delusional” and “plain indifferent”, in a Facebook post.
